Backpacks and Hiking Trails (III) – Exploring the old continent's greatest adventure

GR 20, Corsica, France

Best For: Hikers who aren’t afraid of heights and enjoy ending the day with a delicious meal and the best view.

Length: 112 miles

The Details: The crème de la crème of Europe's Grande Randonnées (commonly known as the GR trails), is on the beautiful Mediterranean Island of Corsica. Here you'll discover some of the steepest mountains on the old continent, including the 8,878-foot Monte Cinto that's sky-rocketing right from the sea. While the GR 20 has been a right of passage for European hikers, it's still off the radar for most adventure-seeking Westerners, who would be shocked to find alluring, yet treacherous mountain traverses on this island famous for its lively beaches and sun-down to sun-up parties.

Corsica claims its own language (closer to Italian) and culture, which has created tensions with the French government over the years. Worry not though as there are no politics on the trail. It is a melting pot of European and international hikers, all looking to enjoy the mountain splendor and spend time tasting fine cheeses and chestnuts at the refuges at the end of each trail section. Here, weary hikers can sip local wine and sleep in a warm bed, making the GR 20 the most luxurious adventure walk on the planet.

When to Go: Summers. The trail can get a big crowd in July and August, as Europeans relax in their one-month off, and the refuges are not always open in June or September due to weather. Also winter brings snow and some sections of the trail are closed.

Shortcut: You don't have time for the entire 112 miles trek? Visit the Cirque de la Solitude, where the trail is so steep that hikers need to cling on to chains in the rock to keep from tumbling down into the gaze-captivating abyss.

Insider Tip: If you want a bed in one of the refuges, you’ll need to get an early start. But even if you sleep late, you won't need to pack much food since you won't need to be staying at one to eat there.

And of course, you can't go on this adventure alone. You will need a trusty companion. And this is the Caribee Mallorca 70 Litre Travel Backpack.
