Tips on Caring For Your Luggage

September 06, 2015 3 min read

You lug around your favorite suitcase or backpack to almost every trip. And it comes back with a scratch here and a stain there. Your heart breaks at the sight of a bruised carrier. Worry not, we at The Luggage Professionals understand how important it is for travelers to have their luggage in perfect condition year after year. So here are some quick and easy home solutions for the general upkeep of your bags and suitcases because not all carriers come with specific instructions for cleaning.

  • Leather Luggage - For general maintenance, removal of minor stains and everyday dust, clean your favorite leather luggage with alcohol-free wipes and immediately dry it with a soft towel. The less tough stains can also be removed using mild liquid soaps and rubbing alcohol. For tougher stains, use manufacturer recommended leather cleansers, and to keep the natural texture intact, finish it up with a leather conditioner. The most difficult are the oil-based stains and in order to get rid of them, sprinkle a bit of cornstarch on the affected area and let it sit for 15 minutes. Gently scrub the stain using a soft brush and finish off by wiping it with a cloth.

  • Polyester and Ballistic Nylon Luggage - Polyester and ballistic nylon are easy to maintain and easy to clean luggage materials. Apart from using the specially designed polyester or nylon cleaners, all you need to do is gently scrub the outer surface with a soft-bristled nylon brush dipped in a warm soapy mixture. You can also use cleaners meant for nylon or a blend of nylon-wool upholstery fabrics.

  • Polycarbonate Luggage - The hard-shelled polycarbonate luggage should be handled with a lot of care as dirt, dust and scratches easily show on its surface. The most hassle-free cleaning routine for polycarbonate suitcases includes dipping a soft cloth in a mixture of warm water and dishwashing liquid to get rid of the tainted spots. Use a damp cloth to remove any remaining soap residue as the spots can peep under through them. To restore the shell with its ultra shine post cleaning, buff the entire outer surface with an eraser cleaning pad to wipe off prominent scratches or visible signs of wear and tear.

  • Cleaning Luggage Wheels and Hardware - Wheels accumulate the maximum amount of dirt and dust and need proper cleaning. Begin with wiping off the dried soil with a cloth and then proceed to wash with a soap and water mixture. Finish off by nicely lubricating all wheels to keep them running smoothly. Also, brush off any dust that gets collected on the zippers using a simple brush.

  • Getting Rid of Bad Odours - If you have just come back from your beach vacation and the damp clothes combined with the sand residue have left your suitcase with appalling smells then try sprinkling baking soda for some help. If the odour still persists, spray a mixture of lemon juice and water and leave it to dry, but make sure that its out of direct sunlight.
