Size Guide

Luggage comes in a variety of sizing’s and weights. Our major brands like Samsonite and Victorinox have all sizes and capacity specifications on the product pages so you can easily compare the different models. Typically the sizes fall into the following ranges.

Standard Suitcase Sizes

Most suitcase manufactures measure the size of the suitcase from the ground to the top of the carry handle, not the internal measurements of the bag. It's common to see sizes indicated in inches, and the sizes typically fall into similar patterns to cater to limitations set by the airlines.

Small cabin suitcase – 48cm or 18inch, capacity up to 40 litres
Also referred to as 'domestic cabin size'

Large cabin suitcase – 55cm or 20inch, capacity up to 45 litres
Also referred to as 'international cabin size'

Extra large cabin suitcase – 56cm or 22inches, capacity up to 50 litres
Also referred to as 'business class cabin'

Medium suitcase – 68cm or 24inch, capacity up to 75 litres

Large suitcase – 74cm or 27inch, capacity up to 117 litres

Extra large suitcase – 85cm or 32inch, capacity up to 130 litres

Suitcase Size Technicalities

Soft vs. Hard Typically soft suitcases the same height as a hard suitcase will be more spacious
2 wheels vs. 4 wheels 2 wheel suitcases will generally have a bigger capacity than a 4 wheel suitcase as the bag goes all the way to the ground.
Capacity Measurement A suitcases capacity is measured in Litres. Manufacturers measure this quite differently, some calculate it resulting in an estimate only. Some test it via displacement and others fill it to measure. Due to the different measurements, manufacturers get very different results and care should be used when comparing.

Airline Allowances

Most airlines will allow one main check in piece up to 23kg (50lb) and not exceeding 32kg (70lb) but can vary depending on airline and travel class.

Regular packing with normal items in a large suitcase will generate a weight between 20kg (44lb) to 26kg (57lb). Medium suitcases will generate a weight between 15kg (33lb) to 20kg (44lb) with regular packing.

Cabin Baggage sizing’s

Maximum dimensions of carry-on baggage are calculated by adding the height, length and depth of the bag (linear dimensions).

Here are the general airline requirements for airline travel in Australia and overseas for cabin baggage. Please note that this is a general guideline and you should always check with your airline on the cabin bag restrictions before you travel.

Domestic guidelines:

Qantas, Jetstar and Tiger airways – 1x 7kg (15lb) cabin bag plus a 3kg (7lb) laptop bag, tote or handbag etc. with total linear dimensions of 115cm. (laptop is generally not included in weight).

Virgin airways – 2x cabin bags with a combined total weight of 7kg (15lb) with a total linear dimension of 105cm for each piece.

International guidelines:

Qantas, Jetstar and Tiger airways – 1x 7kg (15lb) cabin bag plus a 3kg (7lb) laptop bag, tote or handbag etc. with total linear dimensions of 115cm. (laptop is generally not included in weight).

Virgin airways short haul – 2x cabin bags with a combined total weight of 7kg (15lb) with a total linear dimension of 105cm for each piece.

Virgin airways long haul – 1x cabin bag with a total weight of 7kg (15lb) with a total linear dimension of 115cm for each piece. International business is allowed 2 pieces of 7kg (15lb) each.

Please note that some airlines for international travel such as Qantas will allow 2x 115cm cabin bags at 7kg (15lb) per piece. Also some other airlines such as British Airways will allow a 56cm (22inch) suitcase on board with a maximum weight of 23kg (51lb) and you must be able to lift it unaided, plus a second small item. Some airlines such as American Airlines allow a 56cm (22inch) bag with no weight restriction.

All the sizing’s mentioned above include handles, pockets and wheels.
